QUITE apart from a genuine concern about
the impact on the town of Murray Bridge in
South Australia and the 1400 employees of
Thomas Foods International’s huge abattoir
in the town, South Gippsland beef producers
are anxious about the fallout from this week’s
Major structural damage has occurred in
the plant’s near-new boning room but it re-
mains unclear what damage has been caused
to the rest of the plant in a huge fire there on
Wednesday evening, December 3.
TFI spent $30 million upgrading the boning
room in 2015.
The whole plant has the capacity to process
11,000 lambs and 1200 head of cattle a day
and representatives of the firm are regulars at
the VLE Saleyards at Leongatha.
Veteran stockman Mike Stevens of SEJ Le -
ongatha said the damage to the TFI plant is a
“No one is sure what the impact will be but
they are a major player, ” Mr Stevens said.
“They attend here regularly and are active
buyers in the area.
“They’ll also have significant numbers on
feed so what happens to them, where they
would be processed is anyone’s guess.
“We’ll just have to wait and see. ”
Mr Stevens said there was a slight easing in
the prime market and store market at Leon-
gatha last week but on low volumes and without
the usual spread of cattle so observations about
prospects for the year ahead would have to wait.
“But certainly, the fallout from the TFI fire
is a concern,” he said.
THE State Government last week boasted that
it has helped secure a $1.13 million investment in
Bairnsdale by Leadoux Turkeys, enabling them to
relocate and build a new production and process-
ing facility that will create 17 new full time jobs in
Is that something Leongatha could have looked
forward to if the shire allowed more investors to
develop chicken farms and ultimately a processing
plant in the area?
Do we even want that?
At the time the shire rejected the Wooreen ap-
plication, former Mayor and former Wooreen resi-
dent Cr Ray Argento suggested the shire should
consider a policy on broiler farms. It is yet to be
discussed further by the council.
According to a State Government Leadoux
Turkeys is a family business that has operated
in Bairnsdale since 1982 and currently supplies
around 45 butcher outlets and farmers’ markets
across Gippsland and throughout Victoria.
The company will move from its existing on-farm
operation to a large site of industrial land where it
will be able to increase production and generate
future growth within Australia and potentially into
It will see the company increase its employee
base from six full time positions to 23 within two
Wooreen residents are delighted the broiler farm
didn’t set up in their backyard and claim the hilly
country and poor road access were aspects that
clearly made the location entirely unsuitable.
“It simply wasn’t the right place for it. We’re very
relieved,” said nearby resident Jill Forrester this
The Wooreen property has since been sold and
the investors have gone elsewhere, for now.
SA abattoir fire worries
South Gippy cattlemen
The proponents of a rejected chicken farm opportunity at Wooreen, Chris Freney and Jack
Kraan, have taken their business plans elsewhere but who missed out? m153917
Were we turkeys to reject poultry?
The huge blaze last week at the TFI abattoir
in South Australia has imperilled the town
of Murray Bridge and 1400 jobs but its im-
pact on the cattle trade is also of concern to
Gippsland cattle producers.
There was a good-sized crowd in at VLE’s Leongatha Saleyards last Thursday, for the first
store sale of the year, where talk filtered around about the big SA abattoir blaze overnight.
