SOUTH Coast athletes have finished 2017 on a
high, following some great competition.
Round nine of Athletics Victoria Shield was a
twilight meet held at Lakeside Stadium on Friday,
Good conditions greeted the 14 South Coast
athletes who competed and once again there were
some great results including Sarah Lewis who
broke the 800 metre club record.
On Tuesday, December 19, seven South Coast-
ers competed in round one of the Vern Curnow
Shield held at Newborough.
This is a team event where South Coast compete
against three other Gippsland Clubs over three
rounds, with points scored for each event and
overall totals at the end of round three to decide
It was great to see athletes trying different events
to help score points for the club and get them off
to a good start.

THE 18th annual South Gippsland Junior and
Open Classic, held at the Leongatha tennis club,
is on again.
Play will commence Friday, January 5 with 10
and Under unisex singles and doubles, boys and
girls 14&U singles, doubles and mixed and the
men’s and ladies open singles.
Saturday, January 6 will feature boys and girls
12&U singles, doubles and mixed, 16&U boys and
girls singles, doubles and mixed, men’s and ladies
open doubles and mixed as well as the tourna-
ments favourite event family doubles.
Tournament organiser Matthew Pocklington says
he can’t wait for play to kick off on Friday morning
with a forecast of low wind and 27 degrees.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity for players to par-
ticipate in a tournament which is focused on the
players getting as many matches as possible, some
players will play 10 matches a day. The canteen
upstairs will be looking after all the hungry tennis
players and spectators,” said Matt.

Anyone for a tennis
tournament in Leongatha?
Some of the trophy winners from the Leon-
gatha tennis tournament last year. The event
which commences on Friday this week takes
all comers, under age and adult.
At the Korrine and District Junior Tennis Association tournament the pennant doubles
winners were Xander Broadbear and Flynn McMahon (Westernport) from runners-up
Matthew and Luke Nicholson (Westernport).
At the Korrine and District Junior Tennis Association tournament the Section 1 Dou-
bles winners were Dylan Shone and Seth Cummins (Inverloch) from runners-up Kristos
Kossena and Cailen Lone (Phillip Island)
At the Korrine and District Junior Tennis Association tournament the Section 2 Dou-
bles winners were Oscar Gibson-Goldsmith and Levi Patterson (Inverloch) from runners-
up Ned Brown and Zac Mabilia (Wonthaggi).
