What made you want to be a surf coach?
I’ve always loved surfing. I’ve done it forever.
I originally ran Development Programs with the
South Coast Boardriders, just to help out as a
community thing, but I ended up getting a job
doing it and it’s the best job in the world.
What training did you do?
You have to have Bronze qualifications, first
aid certificates, and a coaching certificate. It
doesn’t take long to do the training. The Bronze
qualification is just a Run-Swim-Run and CPR,
that sort of thing. All the safety stuff, that’s the
main thing. And you need to have plenty of surf-
ing experience and knowledge of the beach.
What’s the best thing about the job?
Just getting people up who never thought they’d
be able to get up [on a surfboard]. Just getting the
buzz with them, getting the stoke with them.
What would you say to someone in-
terested in becoming a surf coach?
Just get your qualifications and go for it.
There’s a lot of jobs for surf coaches. They’re
sought after. Young people can make a lifestyle
out of it. We’ve got a young crew that work for
us during the summer and they work in the Ba-
hamas in the winter, or Portugal, or at Camp
America. You can set yourself up for a pretty
good adventurous life. It’s not a bad ticket really.
