WONTHAGGI Police will host a Police Recruit-
ment Information Session at the Wonthaggi
Community Arts Centre on Thursday, May 11.
There’s never been a better time to join the po-
lice force, with a huge recruiting drive aiming to
recruit over 2500 new members across Victoria.
The drive has a strong focus on recruiting fe-
male police officers to address the imbalance of
females in the police force, particularly in higher
So it’s a good time for females to join the force
and progress through the ranks quickly.
Victoria Police is also looking to increase its
diversity in the force, and is warmly welcoming
people who weren’t born in Australia or speak
different languages, as well as those from the
LGBTI community to come along to the infor-
The recruitment branch of Victoria Police will
give a presentation on the avenues that are open
for police officers, protective service officers and
custody officers, while local police officers will
be on hand to answer any questions.
Wonthaggi Acting Sergeant Derek McQueen
joined the police force after he saw an advertise-
ment on TV.
He said he enjoys the variety of the job.
“You don’t know day-to-day what you’re com-
ing into or what you’re dealing with and it can
change. There could be a call out on radio in the
next five seconds that changes everything for the
rest of the day,” he said.
“It’s part of the excitement and keeping it fresh
every day. Most people go to work and they do
the same mundane job day in, day out, but this
is totally different, no two days are the same.
“Pretty much every member who joins, the
reason they join is to help the community, that’s
what we do it for.”
Local police officers will be more than happy
to answer any questions on the night and dis-
miss any misconceptions people have about a
career in the police force.
“Our police can discuss working in the local
area, particularly working in the town you grew
up in which sometimes can be an issue,” Acting
Sergeant McQueen said.
“But the members here who do it don’t see a
problem with it. It’s sometimes advantageous
for us if members know who they’re dealing with
because there’s less resistance.”
The Police Recruitment Information Session
will be held on Thursday, May 11 at 6.30pm at
the Wonthaggi Community Arts Centre.
Wonthaggi Police Jason Hullick, Garth Campbell, Glenn Park, Derek McQueen, Duncan
Mathers and Lee Neubauer are encouraging locals to come along to a police recruitment in-
formation session on Thursday, May 11 at the Wonthaggi Community Arts Centre. rg081817
