RESIDENTS and visitors to the Gippsland
region now have better access to a range of
justice services, following the official opening
of a new Justice Service Centre in Wonthaggi
The Department of Justice and Regulation’s
Regional Director for Gippsland, Will Crinall,
said residents can visit the centre on Korum-
burra Road to get advice on consumer affairs
and dispute settlement, as well as make sher-
iff payments and submit births, deaths and
Mr Crinall said the facility was also a sig-
nificant boost to Victoria’s Community Cor-
rectional Services (CCS) system, helping CCS
staff meet growing demand and improve en-
gagement with offenders.
“ The new centre is ideally placed to help
our staff continue to provide exceptional ser-
vice to the Gippsland community, ” Mr Crinall
The Wonthaggi Justice Service Centre is lo -
cated in one of Victoria’s fastest-growing ar-
eas, with Bass Coast Shire projected to have
the fourth-highest population growth among
non-metropolitan Local Government Areas
between 2016 and 2021.
It will operate in addition to a CCS office in
Korumburra, where South Gippsland Shire-
based offenders on Community Correction
Orders can continue to receive specialist case
The centre was opened by the Deputy Com-
missioner for Corrections Victoria, Rod Wise,
following a Welcome to Country and smoking
ceremony conducted by Steven Parker.
Mr Wise said CCS staff were responsible for
managing and supervising offenders, making
sure they comply with conditions set by the
courts or the Adult Parole Board.
“CSS staff play a pivotal role in case man-
agement, rehabilitation, community pro -
grams and encouraging offenders to make
positive changes in their lives, ” Mr Wise said.
“ By helping offenders rehabilitate and re -
ducing the risk of them re - offending, our staff
are contributing to a safer community.”
The Wonthaggi centre is part of the Victo -
rian Government’s investment of more than
$233 million in a revamped CCS model in the
2016/17 Budget, following on from the $89
million allocated in 2015/16.
CCS staff moved to the new operating mod-
el in January, providing more intensive case
management, better targeted rehabilitation
and support services, and behavioural pro -
grams to reduce reoffending.
Building on 147 new staff funded in the
2015/16 Victorian Budget, more than 160
extra staff are being recruited in 2016-17 to
manage and supervise offenders.
The government has also provided a $10
million boost to treatment and rehabilitation
services, including a new drug and alcohol
program, and additional offending behaviour
