What made you want
to be an Arborist?
I was a schoolteacher in Warrnambool and
then Wonthaggi and I was getting more and
more stressed about it.
I then started climbing with David McFee over
on Phillip Island. He was a mate of mine and
he had his own tree business. I really enjoyed
climbing trees and cutting them down. I started
out dragging branches then went from there
to climbing. I just did it on the weekends and
holidays and then eventually I decided I would
rather do that than teach.
What training did you do?
Once I started getting into it properly, I left
the Island and I still needed to learn a lot so I
started doing work with Peter Bateman in In-
verloch. That was really handy, then I did my
apprenticeship through Wodonga TAFE over at
Moe, they had a campus over there.
experience I already had. I think it should take
I now do contract climbing up north with Alex
Bicknell. We go as far up as NSW. Alex was one
of the first climbing arborists in Australia. He
travels a lot and has a client base all up and
down the east coast and employs contract
climbers. He taught me a lot as well.
Then I recently did a graduate certificate at
Burnley so I think that’s about as far as I can
go with training.
What would you say to someone in-
terested in becoming an arborist?
Have a go. Find someone who is already do-
fun job. It’s fantastic. I love it.
