An exciting opportunity exists for a highly self-motivated team player with a
passion for improving outcomes for Koorie young people to work as a Children’s
Koori Court Liaison Officer. Working in a DET regionally-based multi-disciplinary
area team, the successful applicant will provide advice to the Children’s Koori
Court on educational referral and facilitate access to appropriate educational
options for Koorie young people appearing before the Children’s Koori Courts,
and Children’s Courts in agreed locations. The successful applicant will also be
available to facilitate access to appropriate education options for Koorie young
people on community-based youth justice orders.
You will have a record in project management, stakeholder management and
a well-developed understanding of factors impacting on Koorie learners and
their families. Your conceptual, analytical and relationship building skills will
be critical as will your written communication skills.
The Victorian Government is establishing Victoria as the Education State. The
Education State reforms are designed to develop an education system that
ensures all Victorians have equal access to the benefits and oppor tunities
that come from education.
In Victoria, there are a significant number of learners who have been
disengaged, or are vulnerable to disengaging, from education or training.
Recent studies have shown that with the right intensive suppor t and
inter vention, young people who fall behind and disengage can recover and
catch up when they re-engage in education.
The Victorian Government’s Marrung: Aboriginal Education Plan 2016-2026,
launched in July 2016, has specific action areas which aim to address Koorie
student disengagement and improve education outcomes. This includes the
establishment of four Children’s Koori Cour t Liaison Officer positions, to
extend the positive impact of having DET officers attend cour t sittings and
provide education referral for Koorie young people.
