AFTER leaving school
to start a carpentry ap-
prenticeship at 17, Phillip
Island’s Pietro Cavalieri
longed for more.
Midway through his
time with Apprentice-
ships Group Australia, he
decided he wanted to be-
come a building designer.
He completed his ap-
prenticeship in 2012, trav-
elled for five months and
returned to begin an Ad-
vanced Diploma in Building
Design at RMIT University.
Now, the 23-year-old
has completed one year of
the course, before defer-
ring to take up a building
designer job with Onshore
Design at Ventnor.
Pietro is looking forward
to resuming the degree in
February whilst working
part-time, and spoke to
the Sentinel-Times about
What’s involved with
your job as a building
I design houses, draw
up structural plans, work
out basic engineering and
deliver the final construc-
tion drawings for builders
to construct a house.
I’ve been given an amaz-
ing opportunity by Rus-
sell Good (Onshore De-
sign) where he gives me
a rough sketch of what to
draw and I work out the
structural side of things
and complete the working
drawings. He leaves me to
work independently and I
usually work from home.
Why did you decide to
switch to designing?
Ever since I was little
I always loved building

Midway through my ap-
prenticeship I realised
that I want to design
buildings as well as build
Another major factor I
took into account is envi-
ronmental design, which
is what I’m extremely
passionate about, and
that’s what I want to pur-
sue as a future career.
How have you found

The job situation that
I have at the moment
is a lot more stressful
than university but at
the same time the hours
are flexible and it’s much
more rewarding because
I’m designing and draw-
ing real projects.
I even worked from
Europe for a few months
this year with my laptop.
What advice would

I’ve found my back-
ground in building has
helped me a lot and many
of the students in my
course struggle to under-
stand building concepts
because they don’t know
what they’re drawing.
